Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. Capsicum originated in Bolivia and Brazil, being transported to Mesoamerica and the Caribbean before the arrival of Europeans. In Mesoamerica, it was domesticated and C. annuum became the parent to the cayenne, bell, jalapeno, and tabasco peppers.

Pepper seeds were
