The caulking is then covered over with a <a href="page.php?w=putty">putty</a>, in the case of hull seams, or else in deck seams with melted pine <a href="page.php?w=Pitch_%28resin%29">pitch</a>, in a process referred to as paying, or "calefaction". Those who carried out this work were known as caulkers. </p>
