An <i>(?) ????</i>  was an <a href="page.php?w=undertie">undertie</a>-like  sign written below two adjacent letters to indicate that they belong to the same word when it was necessary to avoid ambiguity, before <a href="page.php?w=Word_divider">word spacing</a> was practiced.</p>
