<p>The first moving-pointer current-detecting device was the <a href="page.php?w=galvanometer">galvanometer</a> in 1890. These were used to measure resistance and voltage by using a <a href="page.php?w=Wheatstone_bridge">Wheatstone bridge</a>, and comparing the unknown quantity to a reference voltage or resistance.
