<p>The word <i>rococo</i> is a satirical derivation of the French word <i>rocaille</i>, coined by the Neoclassical painter <a href="page.php?w=Pierre-Maurice_Quays">Pierre-Maurice Quays</a> (1777-1803). Historically, rocaille referred to a method of decorating <a href="page.php?w=Grotto">grotto</a>es and artificial fountains with pebbles, seashells, and cement, used since the <a href="page.php?w=Renaissance">Renaissance</a>. During the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the term came to describe a decorative motif of interlaced seashells and <a href="page.php?w=Acanthus_%28ornament%29">acanthus</a></p><p>
