The word rococo is a satirical derivation of the French word rocaille, coined by the Neoclassical painter Pierre-Maurice Quays (1777-1803). Historically, rocaille referred to a method of decorating grottoes and artificial fountains with pebbles, seashells, and cement, used since the Renaissance.
