In 1984, many bacteria formerly grouped in the genus Streptococcus were separated out into the <a href="page.php?w=Genus">genera</a> <a href="page.php?w=Enterococcus">Enterococcus</a> and <a href="page.php?w=Lactococcus">Lactococcus</a>. Currently, over 50 species are recognised in this genus.</p>
