The city is part of the historical region of Bessarabia. During the Soviet period the city was known in the Moldavian SSR as Bender in Romanian, written ?????? with the Moldovan Cyrillic alphabet, as Bendery ????é?? in Russian and Bendery (???????) in Ukrainian.
