<p>CPLDs were an evolutionary step from even smaller devices that preceded them: <a href="page.php?w=Programmable_logic_array">programmable logic arrays</a> (PLA) (first shipped by <a href="page.php?w=Signetics">Signetics</a>) and PALs. These in turn were preceded by <a href="page.php?w=Logic_family">standard logic</a> products, which offered no programmability and were used to build logic functions</p><p>
