In its original usage, this was part of the personal name of the bearer, and would change in each generation: Domesday landholder <a href="page.php?w=John_fitzRichard">John fitz Richard</a> was father of <a href="page.php?w=Eustace_fitz_John">Eustace fitz John</a>, followed in successive generations by <a href="page.php?w=Richard_fitz_Eustace">Richard fitz Eustace</a> and <a href="page.php?w=John_fitz_Richard">John fitz Richard</a>.</p>
