After Bashar al-Assad's takeover in 2000, Major General Ali Hammoud was named as head of the General Intelligence Directorate. In 2001, Hisham Ikhtiyar became the head of the General Intelligence Directorate, replacing Hammoud, who became the Minister of the Interior.
