<p>The English noun tense comes from <a href="page.php?w=Old_French">Old French</a> <i>tens</i> "time" (spelled <i>temps</i> in modern French through deliberate archaization), from <a href="page.php?w=Latin">Latin</a> <i>tempus</i>, "time". It is not related to the adjective tense, which comes from Latin <i>tensus</i>, the <a href="page.php?w=Latin_conjugation">perfect passive participle</a> of <i>tendere</i>, "stretch".</p>
