Early history

The original Lionel Corporation was founded in 1900 by Joshua Lionel Cowen and Harry C. Grant in New York City. Cowen designed his first train, the No. 5 electric locomotive, not as a toy, but as an eye-catching display for toy stores. The first electric train, debuted in 1901 was called The Electric Express and by 1906 they had become well established. The first electric trains were powered by wet-cell
