<p>The first telephone pager system was patented in 1949 by <a href="page.php?w=Al_Gross_%28engineer%29">Al Gross</a>. Intended for the use of physicians, there was initial resistance to the idea of being permanently on-call, according to Gross. </p>

<p>One of the first practical paging services was launched in 1950 for physicians in the New York City area. Physicians paid US$12 per month and carried a 200 g pager that would receive phone messages within 40 km of a single transmitter tower. The</p><p>
