It comprised about 20% of the territory of European Russia and largely corresponded to historical lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Cossack Hetmanate, Ottoman Empire (with Yedisan), Crimean Khanate, and eastern Moldavia (Bessarabia).
