These each had their own identities and governments, though in the early modern period almost all the Belgian states became part of larger entities (the <a href="page.php?w=Seventeen_Provinces">Seventeen Provinces</a> (1549-1581) and the <a href="page.php?w=Southern_Netherlands">Southern Netherlands</a> (after 1581)).
