Historically, the Punjabi people were a <a href="page.php?w=heterogeneous">heterogeneous</a> group and were subdivided into a number of clans called <a href="page.php?w=Baradari_%28brotherhood%29">biradari</a> (literally meaning "brotherhood") or <a href="page.php?w=Punjabi_tribes">tribes</a>, with each person bound to a clan.
