two municipalities ceased to exist as they were merged to form Rudersdal Municipality. The municipality of Birkerød covered an area of 34 km2, and had a total population of 21,930 (2005). It merged with Søllerød Municipality to form the new Rudersdal municipality. This created a municipality with an area of 73 km2 and a total population of 53,621 (2005). The new municipality belongs to the new Region Hovedstaden
