<p>40 deer from Oregon were released in Western <a href="page.php?w=Kauai">Kauai</a>, <a href="page.php?w=Hawaii">Hawaii</a>, between 1961 and 1966. These deer thrived on the island, where they now number around 1,000. They have become a fairly popular game species on the island.</p>

<p><big>Taxonomy</big></p>
 <p>All recent authorities consider black-tailed deer a subspecies of <a href="page.php?w=mule_deer">mule deer</a> (O. hemionus). As above, the black-tailed deer group is considered to consist of two subspecies, as it also includes O.&nbsp;h. sitkensis</p><p>
