The Greek word probably derives from an <a href="page.php?w=Indo-European">Indo-European</a> base <i>*derk-</i> meaning "to see"; the <a href="page.php?w=Sanskrit">Sanskrit</a> root <i>????</i>  also means "to see".</p>
