<p>Most packhorses were <a href="page.php?w=Galloway_pony">Galloways</a>, small, stocky horses named after the Scottish district where they were first bred. Those employed in the lime-carriage trade were known as "limegals". Each pony could carry about 240 lb in weight, spread between two panniers.
