<p>The name given to the plant in the <a href="page.php?w=Guaran%C3%AD_language">Guaraní</a> language (of the indigenous people who first used mate) is <i>ka'a</i>, which has the same meaning as 'herb'. <i>Congonha</i>, in Portuguese, a term describing several herb species, is derived from the <a href="page.php?w=Tupian_language">Tupí</a> expression <i>kõ'gõi</i>, meaning something like 'what keeps us alive', but is rarely used nowadays. Mate is from the <a href="page.php?w=Quechua_languages">Quechua</a> <i>mati</i>, a word that means 'container</p><p>
