The term dialect is applied mostly to speech patterns that are unique to an area, which is sometimes called a regiolect, but a dialect may also be defined in other ways such as social class, a sociolect, or ethnicity, a ethnolect.

According to this definition, any variety of a given language can be classified as "a dialect", including any standardized varieties.
