<p>The term dialect is applied mostly to speech patterns that are unique to an area, which is sometimes called a <b>regiolect</b>, but a dialect may also be defined in other ways such as <a href="page.php?w=social_class">social class</a>, a <a href="page.php?w=sociolect">sociolect</a>, or <a href="page.php?w=ethnicity">ethnicity</a>, a <a href="page.php?w=ethnolect">ethnolect</a>.</p>

<p>According to this definition, any variety of a given language can be classified as "a dialect", including any <a href="page.php?w=standard_language">standardized varieties</a>.</p><p>
