Etymology

The word Lhoba is composed of the Tibetan element lho ("south") and the nominalising particle pa, meaning roughly "people of the south" or "southerners." The name was applied by Tibetan-speaking populations to the peoples of the southern forest frontier and was never an indigenous self-designation. In Chinese administrative usage it appears as Luoba (??) or Luoba zu (???, literally "Luoba nationality").
