<p>Though Mopti's location, once a <a href="page.php?w=Bozo_people">Bozo</a> village named Sanga, had long been inhabited, rapid expansion began under Seku Amadu's <a href="page.php?w=Massina_Empire">Massina Empire</a> around 1820.  Expansion continued under the <a href="page.php?w=Toucouleur_Empire">Toucouleur Empire</a></p><p>
