The resulting state is <a href="page.php?w=metastable">metastable</a>, i.e., less stable than the phase to which the transition would have occurred, but not unstable either. This occurs in <a href="page.php?w=superheating">superheating</a> and <a href="page.php?w=supercooling">supercooling</a>, for example. Metastable states do not appear on usual phase diagrams.</p>
