History

Salisbury became the seat of a bishop in 1075. At the time, the city was at the now-abandoned site of Old Sarum, on a hill about north of the present-day cathedral. Old Sarum Cathedral was built in the years after and was consecrated in 1092.

In 1197, bishop Herbert Poore sought permission to re-site
