<p>Searchlights were first used in the <a href="page.php?w=World_War_I">First World War</a> to create "artificial moonlight" to enhance opportunities for night attacks by reflecting searchlight beams off the bottoms of clouds, a practice which continued in the <a href="page.php?w=World_War_II">Second World War</a>.</p><p>
