The state of a system at thermodynamic equilibrium is the one for which some <a href="page.php?w=thermodynamic_potential">thermodynamic potential</a> is minimized (in the absence of an applied voltage), or for which the <a href="page.php?w=entropy">entropy</a> (S) is maximized, for specified conditions.
