Appointed as a lecturer at Manchester in 1999, he was promoted to the position of senior lecturer, and then reader in 2004, being awarded a personal chair in 2005, where he was professor of African and Islamic archaeology. In April 2016 he was appointed to an Al-Qasimi Chair in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter.
