<p>The earliest appearance in Western documents is probably in the Portuguese <a href="page.php?w=Nippo_Jisho">Nippo Jisho</a> (1603), as Vacame.</p>

<p>In 1867 the word wakame appeared in an English-language publication, A Japanese and English Dictionary, by James C. Hepburn.</p>
