It was not until the late nineteenth century that bioluminescence was properly investigated. The phenomenon is widely distributed among animal groups, especially in marine environments. On land it occurs in fungi, bacteria and some groups of <a href="page.php?w=invertebrate">invertebrate</a>s, including <a href="page.php?w=insect">insect</a>s.</p>
