<p>France's earliest, short-lived attempt at setting up overseas departments was after <a href="page.php?w=Napoleon">Napoleon</a>'s <a href="page.php?w=Fall_of_the_Republic_of_Venice">conquest</a> of the <a href="page.php?w=Republic_of_Venice">Republic of Venice</a> in 1797, when the hitherto Venetian <a href="page.php?w=Ionian_Islands">Ionian Islands</a> fell to the <a href="page.php?w=French_Directory">French Directory</a> and were <a href="page.php?w=French_rule_in_the_Ionian_Islands_%281797-1799%29">organised</a></p><p>
