serotonin 5-HT_2A receptor was identified via radioligand binding in 1978 by Leysen and colleagues. Peroutka and Snyder identified two distinct serotonin receptors and named them the 5-HT₁ receptor and 5-HT₂ receptor in 1979. Later, both of these receptors were found to have several subtypes, including the serotonin 5-HT_2A receptor.
