Maria Carter Syphax as his daughter and freed her, along with her 10 children and provided them with 17 acres of the Arlington Plantation. Following his wife's death, Arlington House, then known as the Custis-Lee Mansion, was passed on to her eldest grandson, George Washington Custis Lee.
