<p>by himself and by other scientists and  noticed a pattern that later came to be known as the <a href="page.php?w=law_of_multiple_proportions">law of multiple proportions</a>: in compounds which contain two particular elements, the amount of Element A per measure of Element B will differ across these compounds by ratios of small whole numbers. For instance, Dalton investigated three oxides of nitrogen: "nitrous oxide", "nitrous gas", and "nitric acid". These compounds are known today as nitrous oxide, nitric oxide, and nitrogen dioxide respectively.</p><p>
