In the 20th century Howe Sound experienced high industrial growth. The Britannia mine, chemical plants, and sulfur mills emitted hazardous chemicals and heavy metals into the waters of Howe Sound and the surrounding land. Although the Britannia mine was shut down in 1974, these pollutants persisted in the ecosystem.
