In poetic language, Islay is known as Banrìgh Innse Gall, or Banrìgh nan Eilean usually translated as "Queen of the Hebrides" and  Eilean uaine Ìle - the "green isle of Islay" A native of Islay is called an Ìleach, pronounced .</p>
