<p>The words lute and oud possibly derive from <a href="page.php?w=Arabic_language">Arabic</a> al-?oud (<i>?????</i>- literally means "the wood"). It may refer to the wooden <a href="page.php?w=plectrum">plectrum</a> traditionally used for playing the oud, to the thin strips of wood used for the back, or to the wooden <a href="page.php?w=Soundboard_%28music%29">soundboard</a></p><p>
