Both ammonoids and coleoids have traditionally been assumed to have descended from <a href="page.php?w=Bactritida">bactritids</a>, which in turn arose from <a href="page.php?w=orthocone">straight-shelled</a> <a href="page.php?w=Orthoceratoidea">orthoceratoids</a>. The ammonoids appeared early in the <a href="page.php?w=Devonian">Devonian</a> period</p><p>
