in 1996 (at which more than 1,000 people were arrested) led to more than 300 road schemes being cancelled in November 1995 and to the cancellation of further schemes, including the Thorney bypass, by the new Labour government in 1997.

In 2002 the government announced a new road-building programme, which included the three-mile (4.8 km) dual-carriageway Thorney bypass, which opened on 14 December 2005.
