father became ill and died from bronchitis in 1938. Gardner was 15 years old. After her father's death, the family moved to Rock Ridge near Wilson, North Carolina. Gardner's mother ran another boarding house for teachers and Gardner attended high school in Rock Ridge. She graduated in 1939. The family was not well off and she had to wear hand-me-down clothes to school, to the derision of her classmates. She then attended secretarial classes at Atlantic Christian College
