<p>Cathode rays were discovered by <a href="page.php?w=Julius_Pl%C3%BCcker">Julius Plücker</a> and <a href="page.php?w=Johann_Wilhelm_Hittorf">Johann Wilhelm Hittorf</a>. Hittorf observed that some unknown rays were emitted from the <a href="page.php?w=cathode">cathode</a> (negative electrode) which could cast shadows on the glowing wall of the tube, indicating the rays were traveling in straight lines.
