They named the area "Cochin-China", borrowing the first part from the Malay Kuchi, Kochi, Kuci, or Koci (unrelated to Indian or Japanese cities of Kochi), which referred to all of Vietnam. They appended the "China" specifier to distinguish the area from the city and the princely state of Cochin
