Brezhnev sacked Shelepin's successor and protégé, Vladimir Semichastny (in office: 1961-1967) as KGB Chairman and reassigned him to a sinecure in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Shelepin found himself demoted from the chairman of the Committee of Party and State Control in 1965 to Trade Union Council
