At this point, Microsoft began updating the source code entirely from scratch and did not license any further code or versions of PC Paintbrush. This version featured an updated user interface that would carry on to later versions of Windows up to Windows Vista and allows saving and loading custom color palettes as .pal files. This functionality only works correctly if the color depth of images is 16 bits per pixel (bpp) or higher. Later versions of Paint do not support
