In a daring sortie of 7 August 1788, the Turks under Hüseyin Pasha managed to rout Suvorov's troops, who was seriously wounded and gave his post to General Bibikov.

Before the siege

Potemkin maintained correspondence with Suvorov, treating him with favor and trust; he reported political news, sent samples of variable weapons and equipment, congratulated him on holidays. Once he sent him his greatcoat, asking him to wear it instead of a dressing gown.
