<p>The sign , now universally accepted in mathematics for equality, was first recorded by Welsh mathematician <a href="page.php?w=Robert_Recorde">Robert Recorde</a> in <a href="page.php?w=The_Whetstone_of_Witte">The Whetstone of Witte</a> (1557), just one year before his death.
