<p>Physiologically, blood calcium is tightly regulated within a narrow range for proper cellular processes. Calcium in the blood exists in three primary states: bound to proteins (mainly <a href="page.php?w=albumin">albumin</a>), bound to anions such as <a href="page.php?w=phosphate">phosphate</a> and <a href="page.php?w=Citric_acid">citrate</a>, and as free (unbound) <a href="page.php?w=ionized_calcium">ionized calcium</a>.
