This transformation of obsidian is accelerated by the presence of water. Although newly formed obsidian has a low water content, typically less than 1% water by weight, it becomes progressively <a href="page.php?w=Mineral_hydration">hydrated</a> when exposed to <a href="page.php?w=groundwater">groundwater</a>, forming <a href="page.php?w=perlite">perlite</a>.</p><p>
