By 1972, Ames supported flyby missions to Jupiter and Saturn with Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11. Those missions collected data on the radiation environment, moons, and gravity-assist trajectories later used by planners of the more complex Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions. In 1978, the program returned to the inner Solar System with the Pioneer Venus Orbiter
